In contrast, environmental disasters are caused by human and/or machine errors. Examples are oil spills and chemical plant explosions. Both natural disasters and environmental disasters take away people’s access to the basic necessities of food, water, and shelter; create a need for relocation; and cause long-lasting damage to communities. Human response to disasters has been recorded throughout human history. [citation needed] In ancient times disasters were often perceived as a result of a deity, divine being, or spiritual creature showing their displeasure over human behavior.[citation needed] This later changed as humans began to see disasters as natural events that caused physical destruction and social chaos to individuals.

This book was written as a sequel to an earlier volume by the same author on the impact of natural disasters, The Impact of Geology on the United States: A Reference Guide to Benefits and Hazards (Westport, CT: Greenwood Press, ).
